Log an injury your child arrived with — what happened, where on the body, and your signature — so it's on record before drop-off.
Parents whose child picks up a bump, graze or bruise outside childcare: at home, at the weekend or at another setting. You'll need the parent app (see
Getting started as a parent). It takes about three minutes.
Logging it before drop-off means your childminder knows it happened before your child arrived. You both have the same signed account, and there's no question later about where the injury happened.
If your child has hurt their head, ring your childminder as well. When you mark the head on the body map, the app reminds you: "Health guidance recommends calling the childminder immediately for all head injuries."
Tap the Menu at the top left of your home screen, then choose Log Injury at Home.
Under Which child?, pick the child who was hurt.
The date and time start as right now. Change them if it happened earlier.
Under What happened?, describe how it happened and what you did about it. This part is required.
Under Where is the injury?, tap the body map where the injury is, then add what kind of injury it is, its colour and its size. You can mark more than one spot.
Set Expected Arrival Time, so your childminder knows when to look out for you.
Tap the signature box and sign with your finger, then tap Sign & Submit to Childminder. You'll see "Injury report submitted and signed. The childminder has been notified."
If something's missing (the child, what happened, or your signature), the app tells you what to add.
Your childminder checks the injury against your report when your child arrives, and acknowledges it.
Made a mistake? Until your childminder acknowledges the report, you can tap Delete report on the confirmation screen. After that, the record is your childminder's to keep: accident and injury records must normally be kept until 21 years and 3 months after a child leaves the setting.
Sometimes your childminder spots an injury and starts a note before you've logged it. You'll find it waiting under Documents & Contracts. It opens this same form with a box headed "Your childminder noted:", followed by "Please add the rest of the details below and sign to complete this report."
An injury your child arrives with has to be recorded separately from one that happens in childcare. A report signed by you, with the injury marked on a body map, is a clear account written while it's fresh. It protects your childminder, and it gives you a record of what you told them.
