What the latest statutory updates mean for your daily childminding practice.

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) was updated on 1 September 2025. Unlike previous updates which focused on curriculum, this update is laser-focused on child safety and safeguarding.
Here is what you need to change in your daily routine to stay compliant.
Previously, "safer eating" was largely guidance. It is now a strict legal requirement following several tragic choking incidents in the sector.
What this means for you: You cannot leave children eating in the high chair while you pop into the hallway to answer the door or go to the toilet. You must be in the room, looking at them.
Food Prep: You must follow strict preparation protocols (e.g. quartering grapes/tomatoes) to minimise choking risks.
To prevent children "slipping through the net," the 2025 framework introduces a new duty on attendance.
What this means for you: You can't just accept a "no show". If a parent doesn't turn up, you must text/call. If you can't get hold of them, you must call their emergency contacts. You are now required to hold more than one emergency contact number for every child.
The New Rule: Childminders working with assistants must have a clear whistleblowing policy.
What this means for you: If you employ an assistant, they must know how to report concerns about your conduct to Ofsted if necessary. This might feel awkward, but it is a safeguarding requirement to protect children.
The New Rule: There is a strengthened requirement to ensure children's privacy during nappy changing and toileting.
What this means for you: Check your changing station. Is it overlooked by the garden or a window? You may need blinds or a screen to ensure dignity is maintained, balancing this with the need for supervision.
